Navigate changes to ISO 14001:2026
The new version of the ISO 14001 environmental management standard was published in April 2026.
ISO 14001: 2026 provides a more strategic framework with which to align with global business priorities and strengthen environmental requirements (such as sustainable development, climate resilience, life cycle perspective and supply chain accountability).
Key changes to ISO 14001: 2026:
- Climate & Environmental Context (Clause 4.1): Organizations must now explicitly consider environmental conditions being affected by the organisation or capable of affecting the organisation, such as pollution levels, availability of natural resources, climate change, biodiversity, or ecosystem health.
- Expanded Compliance Scope (Clause 4.2): compliance now covers legal, contractual, voluntary initiatives, industry codes and membership requirements.
- Life Cycle Perspective (Clause 4.3): environmental impacts are to be considered across the entire product life cycle – from sourcing, design, manufacturing, transport, use and end of life.
- Leadership & Commitment (Clause 5.1): top management’s involvement and accountability are reinforced to support all relevant roles to ensure effective environmental management.
- Planning for Emergencies (Clause 6.1): Organizations must now consider all potential emergency scenarios like spills, fire, extreme weather in their environmental aspect evaluation.
- Planning and Managing of Changes (Clause 6.3): a new clause requires a risk-based approach to manage both planned and unplanned changes to the environmental management system.
- Supply Chain Control (Clause 8.1): organisations must ensure externally provided processes, products and services affecting the environment are controlled or influenced e.g. with the use of audits and monitoring.
